Episode #177: "Batman '88" | The Killing Joke & A Death in the Family (1988)

In 1986, Frank Miller introduced us to a dark and gritty Batman who's pulling a Murtaugh and definitely getting too old for this #@&% in The Dark Knight Returns. In 1987, Frank Miller jumped back and showed us Bruce Wayne's formative first year as the Batman in Batman: Year One. In 1988, Alan Moore, Jim Starlin, Brian Bolland, and Jim Aparo decided to beat the crap (literally) out of the Bat family by crippling Batgirl and killing Robin. This episode we take a look at two of the most influential Batman stories of all time: The Killing Joke and A Death in the Family.

These movies are eerily similar. Danny DeVito feels like he’s looking into a mirror when he meets his twin brother Julius for the first time. Josh Baskin looks in the mirror and sees Tom Hanks. Both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Hanks end up with the goofy “I kissed a girl and I liked it” grins on their faces. Episode #174: "I Want To Believe" | Casablanca (1942)

Victor Laszlo believes in freedom. Ilsa believes in Victor. Rick believed in his love for Ilsa. We wanted to believe that Rick and Ilsa didn't "get together" in that one scene because it just makes other conversations awkward later. Mostly, though, we want you to believe that the hype is real. Casablanca is one of the greatest movies ever made and we celebrate its 75th anniversary by taking a look back at this classic cinematic masterpiece.
